Make a Crankie

In 2017, my friend Tom Robison taught me how to make crankies. They are long panoramic illustrations, that you can “crank” through a viewing box to accompany a story or song. Over the past 10 years I’ve made lots of them, and enjoyed helping other people make them. You can follow my @BozemanCrankie Instagram to see what I’ve been up to, and see updates about crankie events, or visit my Marla Goodman Crankies playlist on Youtube to see some crankies I’ve made and helped others to make.

There are many ways to make crankies. Sue Truman has gathered plenty of intel on how to do it at her Crankie Factory website, and also some wonderful crankie performances.

I devised a way to make almost any kind of discarded box into a crankie box. This pattern for Kleenex Box crankies is one example. Feel free to download it and improve on it! Ask me questions, if you need help.

I also designed a print-cut-and-fold crankie template which I sell as a download on Etsy at my Goodwerks Shop.

Have fun cranking!
